How Can a Student Correct the Parent Of Record On the 2024-25 FAFSA?

Award Year: 2024-25 KA-36937 Helpfulness Rating 724 page views

This guidance is specific to the 2024-25 award year and later.

Scenario: The dependent student's parents are divorced, and the student reported the wrong parent on the FAFSA.

Answer: According to guidance NASFAA has received from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), the student will be able to replace the incorrect parent contributor when the FAFSA corrections process becomes available. According to the January 30, 2024 Electronic Announcement (GENERAL-24-06), the corrections process will open when FAFSAs are processed and Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) are generated in "the first half of March."

It is NASFAA's understanding that financial aid administrators (FAAs) will not be able to make such corrections in the FAFSA Partner Portal (formerly FAA Access) on the student's or parent's behalf because the introduction of another parent contributor requires the new parent's consent and signature, which the FAA cannot enter on the contributor's behalf. See AskRegs Knowledgebase Q&A, Beginning With 2024-25, Will a Financial Aid Administrator Be Able To File the FAFSA On the Student's Behalf?

Remember, parent or record can only be corrected if it was incorrect when the FAFSA was filed, or the family switched parent of record between award years. See AskRegs Q&A, Can a Student Switch Parent Of Record On the FAFSA?
